SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF NISQUALLY QUAKE – HAVE YOU PREPARED YET?

For Immediate Release

San Diego, CA – (February 28, 2003) – It has been two years since the powerful Nisqually earthquake rocked the Seattle area, but many people are still not heeding the message that preparedness is the best defense against earthquakes.

The magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck in the late morning of Wednesday, February 28, 2001. It lasted for around forty seconds and caused damage that was eventually estimated at a record setting $1.5 billion. More than 400 injuries were also reported.

It was the most damaging temblor to hit the area in more than 35 years. Scientists say more quakes in the future are a certainty and they say those shakers will definitely be of a larger magnitude than that of the Nisqually earthquake.

Falling objects cause most of the serious injuries in an earthquake. Heavy pieces of furniture such as china cabinets, entertainment centers and TVs can become your worst nightmare if they are unsecured.

That’s why people need to take the time to be prepared. Preparedness can help save lives, it reduces the risk of injuries and it can lessen the potential for damage to household possessions.

It’s not hard, time consuming nor expensive to secure the big-ticket items in a home, and it shouldn’t be difficult to find motivation to make the effort, but most of the time most of us make the mistake of putting it in the ‘to do later’ basket.

Preventive action now could be priceless later and it’s as easy as going to your local hardware store to get earthquake safety straps.

“It’s cheap insurance and once you do it you can forget about it because it does a very nice job of keeping things in place,” said Bruce Wendt of Redmond, Wash.

Mr Wendt has earthquake-proofed his home by strapping down large items and securing smaller knick-knacks. “I used Quakehold putty on my crystal and picture hooks on the wall, so now I never have to worry about stuff falling over.”

Preparedness is the best defense against earthquakes. Not only will it protect your possessions, but it might also help save the life of a loved one.
